Chapter 13

They eventually returned when the light was fading to find that Rosalind was still not through her ordeal. Everyone was gathered in the drawing room apart from Mr Wadeson, who had sensed there was some animosity towards him that had not been there on the first evening. He excused himself and returned to his bedchamber.

Annabelle looked as if she had been crying, and Frederick looked like thunder, but he sat close to Annabelle, his arm around her in a defiant act of support. Eleanor was more worried about her eldest sister than she was about herself. She had Joseph with her, and she knew without doubt he would protect her.

Peter was as nervous as all previous expectant fathers before him had been. He was pacing the room, not concentrating on anything going on around him. After a while Mr Johnson tired of the company and removed himself to the library. Joseph approached Frederick and indicated he wished to speak to him. Frederick reluctantly left Annabelle’s side, but he followed Joseph to the window.

“I need to speak to Mr Johnson, but I don’t wish for Eleanor to be in a position where she is unaccompanied if she needs to leave the room,” Joseph said quietly.

“Don’t worry; I won’t be leaving either Annabelle or Eleanor alone for a moment,” Frederick said gritting his teeth. “I would hang for killing the low life, if it didn’t mean leaving Annabelle.”

“I don’t know why there is the need to act in this way, but I’m presuming it is vital that we do,” Joseph said. “I was asked to not leave Eleanor alone unless she was with her sisters or their husbands, but there was no mention of her father or Mr Wadeson.” He was hoping Frederick would tell him more of what he wanted to know.

“It’s Wadeson, but the father seems to hold him in the highest regard, so I wouldn’t trust him to protect any of them,” Frederick ground out.

Joseph frowned; he had thought only Eleanor was at risk from something, but from Frederick’s words, it seemed all the sisters were at risk. He did not like not knowing what was going on; he was a man always fully in control, but at least now he had a little more information to work with.

“I shall return shortly,” he said before leaving the room.

Eleanor followed Joseph’s movements with a frown on her face. She felt a moment of panic when he left the room, but Frederick walked behind her and patted her gently on her shoulder in reassurance before sitting down next to Annabelle. The drawing room door opened once more to allow access for Grace and Harry to enter the room.

“Any news?” Grace asked the room at large.

“Nothing. I don’t understand what’s taking so long,” Peter growled, running his hand through his hair in frustration.

Grace approached him and slipped her arm through his. “She is strong. She will be well.”

“I hope so Grace; I couldn’t bear anything to happen to her. I just couldn’t,” Peter said quietly, his voice cracking.
